Multiplication and Times Tables

Introduction to multiplication for KS1 and early KS2. Times tables, arrays, repeated addition and tips to help your child at home.

What This Topic Covers

Multiplication is introduced in Year 1 through counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, and becomes a formal topic in Year 2 and 3. Children learn that multiplication means "groups of" -- 3 x 4 means 3 groups of 4.

Key representations include arrays (rows and columns of dots), repeated addition (4 + 4 + 4 = 12, which is the same as 3 x 4), and number lines showing jumps. Children learn the 2, 5 and 10 times tables first, then extend to 3, 4 and 8 in Year 3.

They discover that multiplication can be done in any order (3 x 5 = 5 x 3), which halves the number of facts they need to learn. By the end of Year 4, children are expected to know all times tables up to 12 x 12.

Why It Matters

Times tables are the engine of maths from Year 3 onwards. Division, fractions, area, percentages and algebra all rely on quick recall of multiplication facts. The Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check makes fluency an explicit school target.

Children who know their times tables feel more confident and can focus on problem-solving rather than basic calculation. Starting early with the 2s, 5s and 10s gives children a significant head start.

Example Questions

3 x 5 = ___

Answer: 15

How many legs do 4 spiders have?

Answer: 32, because 4 x 8 = 32

What is 6 x 2?

Answer: 12

Draw an array for 3 x 4. How many dots?

Answer: 12

5 x ___ = 30

Answer: 6

Tips for Parents

  1. 1

Start with counting in 2s, 5s and 10s -- this IS times tables practice without the pressure.

  2. 2

Use arrays: arrange objects in rows to show 3 x 4 as 3 rows of 4.

  3. 3

Learn times tables through songs -- there are many free ones on YouTube.

  4. 4

Practise a few facts daily rather than cramming. Little and often works best.

  5. 5

Use real-life contexts: 'There are 3 bags with 5 apples in each -- how many altogether?'

  6. 6

Play multiplication games: dice roll and multiply, or card games where you multiply two cards.
