Year 2 Spelling: Words and Rules

Year 2 spelling words and rules explained for parents. Common exception words, suffixes, homophones and practical tips for helping at home.

What This Topic Covers

Year 2 spelling builds on Year 1 with more complex rules and a new set of common exception words including "because", "different", "every", "beautiful", "should", "could" and "would".

Children learn more suffix rules: -ment, -ness, -ful, -less, -ly, and the apostrophe for contractions (can't, didn't, it's) and possession (the girl's book). They learn homophones -- words that sound the same but are spelled differently, such as "there/their/they're", "to/too/two" and "hear/here".

They also extend their knowledge of alternative spellings from Phase 5 phonics, learning when to use "ge" vs "dge", "s" vs "c" for the soft 's' sound, and the rules for adding suffixes to words ending in 'e' or 'y'.

Why It Matters

Year 2 spelling rules are used throughout primary school and beyond. The suffix rules, apostrophe rules and homophone distinctions taught in Year 2 appear in the KS1 SATs and remain relevant right through to GCSE English.

Children who master these patterns early develop better proofreading skills and produce more accurate writing. They start to notice patterns in English spelling rather than seeing each word as a random sequence of letters.

Example Questions

Spell the word 'because'.

Answer: b-e-c-a-u-s-e

What is the contraction for 'do not'?

Choose the correct word: 'They went over ___.' (there/their/they're)

Answer: there

Add -ly to 'happy'.

Answer: happily -- change y to i, then add -ly

Add the suffix -ful to 'care'.

Answer: careful

Tips for Parents

  1. 1

Focus on the Year 2 common exception words -- many of these trip up children well into KS2.

  2. 2

Teach homophones in pairs: 'there' (place), 'their' (belonging), 'they're' (they are).

  3. 3

Practise contractions: write the full form and the contraction side by side (do not / don't).

  4. 4

Use mnemonics for tricky words: 'because = big elephants can always understand small elephants'.

  5. 5

Encourage your child to proofread their own writing -- spotting errors is a skill in itself.

  6. 6

Read widely. Children who read more encounter correct spellings repeatedly, which reinforces learning.
